Sky Pricks

'Sky pricks' hail from the strange-realm Mega Barry VII. The strange-realms are - as the name suggests - somewhat less than the ordinary. Each one is made up of worlds where the usual laws of whyzics have been perverted in some fashion (and if not 'perverted', at the very least 'kinked up' a bit).

Accordingly, the creatures which inhabit these realms lean towards the odd side.

The world of Mega Barry VII is carved up by rivers of glowing, green ooze. Unlike regular ooze, this stuff floats upwards in the form of sticky, glowing spheres. The sky pricks form clouds from these balls, reaching out to grab them with their long, extending arms.

It's not 100% clear why they do this. A visitor asked once, but the sky prick failed to provide illumination - it just wailed like a wronged goat. Possibly they use the sticky clouds to ensnare the winged, aubergine-like creatures that jazz-scat through the air. Maybe they just like hoarding ooze.

Sky Prick Facts
  • The name 'sky prick' doesn't come from anyone official - it's just what someone thought when looking at one once.
  • Other names thought at them include 'ooze monkeys', 'creep floaters', 'slime rats', 'arm things', and 'not-Barrys'.
  • There isn't a collective noun for sky pricks because they're solitary creatures who never leave the stickiness of their own bubble clouds.
  • The hermit-like sky pricks mate by using their extending arms to hand over the requisite DNA to one another.

Creation Notes

The sky pricks are a good example of why I started drawing creatures from my book. Sky pricks only feature in one paragraph of The Quest Factor, but illustrating them suddenly gives the world an extra depth. It also allows me to do deep lore pages like this - world-building being my second favourite part of any franchise (the first is usually 'Keanu Reeves')

The inspiration for the sky pricks came from the weird taxidermy pieces of Adele Morse.
